Act 1, Scene 3

In scene 3 we see the nurse, Juliet, and her mother discussing her possible marriage with Paris.  Mrs. Capulet is really pushing the marriage and Juliet isn't so sure about it.  The nurse thinks Paris is really good looking and that Juliet should get to know him.  Juliet will be dressed in pajamas because this is before she starts getting ready for the party.  Emma, the girl playing Juliet, will be seen in Hello Kitty pajama pants, an elephant robe, and white slippers.  Mrs. Capulet will be wearing a white dress because she is a Capulet.  I think the nurse should be seen in scrubs so people can easily tell that she is a nurse.

Act 1, Scene 2

During scene 2, we are introduced to Paris.  In the original play he is in his mid-twenties and looking to marry Juliet.  In the present time version he is still looking to marry Juliet, but he is 19 and she is under 18 and he is trying to convince Mr. Capulet to give him permission.  I pictured Paris wearing something casual, possibly jeans and a white t-shirt.  I thought Mr. Capulet could be seen in a suit and tie to look professional.  In this scene we also meet the servant.  He could be wearing black dress pants, a white button down and a jacket.  Something like in the picture below.

The first scene is set outside of one of the schools and the characters will be dressed in their uniforms.  The kids from the Montague's school will be wearing khakis and colored polos as their school uniform.  The Capulets will be seen in khakis with navy blue blazers.  I chose these combinations because I feel that the Montagues are more laid back than the Capulets.  I wanted them to be perceived that way.

My Freshman English class is putting on a production of Romeo and Juliet.  I chose to be a costume designer because I care a lot about appearance.  I don't want the actors to get up on stage, do a great job, but not look the part.  The directors decided it would be set in present time and between two enemy schools.  I think that Romeo and Juliet should be seen wearing school uniforms in different colors to represent the school they come from. When they are at the dance Juliet should be dressed as an angel.  I'm excited to talk to the other costume designers to share my ideas.
